British Cartographic Society Annual Symposim 2007

Small scale mapping for publications

The workshop will look at the various editorial and practical issues surrounding the compilation and creation of small scale maps for atlas publication. Based on the experience of working on Times and Collins world atlases, the principles of dealing with different types of map will be discussed: general reference maps, thematic maps; and statistical maps. Map files will be provided to experiment with editorial selections and cartographic specifications.

We aim to give the attendee an awareness of the issues involved in creating small scale maps for publication, particularly in the context of world atlases. There will be particular reference to the cartographic principles followed in the creation of small-scale general reference, thematic and statistical mapping
